Second Guessing the Decision to Have Breast Augmentation

Uncertainty of Breast Implants

Uncertainty of Breast Implants

You’ve decided to have breast augmentation surgery and even scheduled the procedure. However, a few days or a few weeks before the surgery, anxiety starts creeping into your mind. You start to second guess your decision and wonder if you are doing the right thing. This is a natural response to the decision to have any cosmetic surgery. Let’s take a look at why you are having second thoughts.

Prior to Surgery

Before the surgery, you made the decision and are running on adrenaline. Yet, your excitement can be lessened by the opinions of others causing you to take it personally. In addition, life can provide unexpected events or financial situations to make you second guess your decision. This see-saw of excitement and fear can be a nightmare but is totally normal.

Strange Breasts after Surgery

Post-surgery, you will immediately have fuller and shapelier breasts as well as more pain, bruising and swelling than you expected. The medication will cause constipation and possibly other side effects. At times, the implants will appear smaller or larger than anticipated and appear very high on the chest. It will take a little time for your body to adjust to the new shape and for the implants to settle into their final position. Implants that are placed under the pectoral muscle can be felt moving with your chest muscles. A change in nipple sensation is also a possibility after breast augmentation as they may feel sore, numb or sensitive. Therefore, it is natural to feel random tingling and other sensations within the breast tissue as the nerves heal. During this recovery period, your breasts and your emotions have a lot to deal with so you might have second thoughts about the surgery.

The Emotional Impact

After breast augmentation, most women can’t wait to get a peek at their new curves. However, what you see in the mirror can have a psychological impact on you. The surgery makes a significant alteration to the body. With all of the swelling and the high sitting implants, you may wonder if you made the right decision. Even if you love what you see, you are going to have doubts. For the first few days, things will seem strange as you get used to the “new you”. Some women are completely satisfied while others develop a phenomenon referred to as “boob greed”.  With boob greed, you still love your new breasts but envy a bigger pair. Other patients fear they went overboard with the size of their implants. It is common to feel this way during the first few weeks because of the new breast size and appearance. Doctors recommend that you give it some time. After you heal and purchase a new wardrobe, you will likely love your new look.

Worry Less and Love More

Remember to keep things in perspective before and after breast augmentation. If you chose implants that fit your lifestyle and look proportional with your body, you have nothing to worry about after surgery. It is important to take time when choosing your breast implant size in the first place. Any anxiety and doubt should disappear as the breasts begin to heal and settle into place. When considering breast enhancement surgery, it is important to have mental and emotional support. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family for help. If you continue to feel anxious about your new look, contact your surgeon for further advice.
